Editor's note: Peperoncino has now closed.

My friend D had been holding on to some "money off "coupons for a local Italian restaurant - Peperoncino - for months. But since we both have kids and are relatively new to Town it had taken us months to find babysitters. Eventually the big day came and once the four of us: D & D me and C (even that sounds like a cbeebies show) became used to the novelty of talking without interruption we began to relax. However Peperoncino was staffed that night by the most manic not to say wired waitress I have ever met. When C and I arrived she greeted us, she smiled, she beamed, she laughed, she guffawed us to our table. Throughout the evening she managed to maintain this level of mania - with jokes, at our expense I think, and nudge nudge wink wink stuff to me and D about our blokes. This was pretty intense really for people not used to going out after dark and who are a touch reserved. The weird thing was that by the end of the evening following a couple of bottles of wine, we were not only numbed to her behaviour we were in competition, and seeing "International liqueur" on the menu - we ordered four , you know "for a laugh" - she laughed, we laughed, we waited, they never came. I think we had overstepped the mark.

The food was good - we shared carpaccio with shards of parmesan cheese and roasted vegetables & mozarella cheese dripping in olive oil, both were succulent and tasty. I had the chargrilled seafood, which came with a mountain of squid, swordfish, prawns and was excellent. C had a mountain of fillet steak - juicy and fall-away. The desserts were disappointingly bland compared to the rest of the meal (warm tiramisu anyone?) - which is strange. It was expensive even with our discount, but probably gets away with it because it is Tunbridge Wells. Approved - but brace yourself for fun. £££££££££ Havoc
