New wave wines of superior quality at one of England's more famous vineyards are available for sampling at this delightful and friendly pub on the Lamberhurst Vineyard estate.

We surprised the staff by turning up for lunch with one of our junior agents at the crack of 12 noon, but our reception was charming and genuine. The menu had a few old favourites - gammon, steak pie, etc, but this was balanced with more adventurous takes on mediterranean dishes. Our gazpacho, for instance, was zingy and tasty - but it could have been improved by being more chunky rather than pureed down. A steak with cheesy mash (yes I know - ugh!) was changed to with chips and was cooked well and to order, but without the menu-promised "curious wine and garlic herb butter".

Service by waiting staff and the chef (who came out to check everything was ok) was excellent. Approved - just - setting and service will make us return. M
