Alright, we all know you go to the Ivy for the name and the status. You will spend more than the food is really worth but that's OK because that isn't really why you're there. With that in mind, we actually had an excellent meal. We had just been to see The Play What I Wrote (heartily recommended) and were in the perfect frame of mind to get in a drunken brawl with an A list celebrity or Russell Crowe. Sadly, there was no sign of Russell (or even Shane Richie), so we made do with eating.
I had the leek tart to start which was very good but just a fraction too heavy to be outstanding. That was more than compensated for by the rump of lamb which was utterly beautiful; tender and juicy and for once, more than two mouthfuls worth. I also had a rather indulgent side order of creamed spinach which was extravagant but perfect. The chocolate pudding souffle was as rich and decadent as it sounds and everything was beautifully presented. We also had a bottle of Gigondas '99, a couple of glasses of port and a few g & t's and the bill still came in at about £60 per head which was pretty reasonable for what we had. One thing that did surprise me was the service, always on hand and attentive but never once did anyone try and push us into more dishes or extra's we didn't want or try and get us out the door as soon as we had finished. It was a very relaxed and pleasant environment to enjoy a meal in. The search for Russell must go on. Approved King Mob |
